I'm in Amsterdam. I always wear a sling style bag with a shallow profile that rests on my chest . Cell phone fits either in that bag or in my front pocket. Keys, passport and wallet in the sling bag. Nothing important goes in any other pockets, EVER. No exceptions. Never had a problem, but then the key here, always, is good situational awareness. And if you're going to enjoy music when you're out in public, use bone conductive headphones so you're not isolating yourself from your surroundings. It's like I always say: Be smart, be safe.

When I travel to pickpocket infested places I use a travel bag with a slash proof strap and embedded mesh in the bag so it can't be slashed.
I've worn a money belt when travelling for years.
I would be evil and have my bag full of rusted razor blades and use needles or a mechanism that cuts off their fingers

I bought a slash proof travel purse that’s crossbody. It has wire screening in the body and the strap. It has locking zippers and RFID shielding. I also wear it under my coat if I have one on. I physically hang onto it in front of me.
In Paris, my niece was sitting at an outdoor cafe and a criminal THUG walked by and ripped her necklaces off her neck- got a handful of hair, too. So fucked up. Jokes on the a hole- none of it was real. F er.

the only tip you need – don't look like a tourist and be aware of your bag in crowded places… but I do agree – leave your passport in the hotel, cause that is way harder to replace than some bank cards

Just leave your passport in the hotel period. If you lose it just by accident, you're screwed, you can't fly back home. Getting an emergency passport is going to be so stressful and costs a bomb.

Wear a jacket with inside pockets and don't carry any bags at all. Do not use the outer pockets for anything valuable. All I carry in those ones is kleenex and cheap gloves. If you're shopping and need to carry items you purchase use a backpack that has a lock on the zipper. Even a safety pin will deter them as it takes too long to undo the pin BUT that one is possible for them should you find urself in a crowded subway for longer than 30 seconds. Number one rule…DO NOT underestimate these criminals!
